Thanksgiving Centerpieces

Ways to create a festive centerpiece to decorate your Thanksgiving table

Using a Pumpkin as Your Vase
Here are some guidelines for using a pumpkin as your vase:
1) Cut off the top half of your pumpkin
2) Carve out and clean the center of your pumpkin
3) Place a vase in the center of the hollow pumpkin
4) Fill the vase with water
5) Arrange fall colored flowers to place in the vase
6) Make sure when cutting the flowers that they are tall enough to stick out over the top of the pumpkin and can still reach the water

Fill Glass Hurricanes with Candles and Acorns
Also add moss, pumpkins or gourds to fill in between the candles

Pinecone Place Card Holders

Pinecones can be great place card holders. You may have to dab a tiny drop of glue on the pinecone in order for the place card to stay upright. Write an adjective on the place card that describes what you are thankful for about that person.

Thanksgiving Reflections

If you are looking for a new way to set your Thanksgiving Table, consider finding inspiration in my Thanksgiving Reflections table in Tablescapes. I rented a square table and mirrored table top. I used regular gourds and spray painted them silver. I piled them up in the center of the table and accented them with red candles. The adorable turkey plates in black, white and red were a garage sale find and the red turkey tureens came from William Sonoma. I placed a journal and pen at everyone's seat to encourage them to reflect on the things that they were thankful for! I also made place cards out of simple reflective scrap-booking paper from Michael's. Send me photos of your Thanksgiving Tables. I can't wait to see what you create!

Happy Thanksgiving and I am so grateful to you for keeping up with my blog!

Slimmer Legs!

I have always been a bit self-conscious about my legs. They are one of those troubled spots that I can't seem to fix no matter how much I exercise! When I heard a world class stylist recommend an instant trick for slimmer legs I listened up right away! Here a few of her tips:
-Dark Leggings are lady's best friend! Tights are back and they are so slimming when they are in a dark color. This season, hunter green tights are all the rage and they could work for you as long as you get them in a dark green matte finish. Shiny tights can make your legs look bigger!
-The classic small fishnet can be very flattering. If you are wearing a tight skirt or dress, opt for a thigh-high version so that the pattern does not show through. I like to buy the inexpensive version as I have a tendency to tear mine often!
-The fishnets with a larger diamond design fool the eye and make you legs seem smaller in comparison. I like the "Tabea" by Wolford.
-A nude color open weave tight is genius if you buy it in a control top that will help you shrink your hips and thighs. The nude is a subtle way to wear this trend if the black is too much for you. I love the "Open Weave Tight End" by Spanx.

Photo Perfect

Taking a family photo worthy of a Christmas card is a difficult task so I turned to Kady Dunlap, a professional photographer who has certainly captured her fair share of precious kids, for some tips!
She gave me some great recommendations:
1. Orient your session around your children's happiest time of day! Pick a time when they are most alert therefore more willing to co-operate.
2. Be sure that your clothing selections are both simple (no crazy patterns or busy prints) and comfortable for you child to wear. Itchy or scratchy clothing will cause them to squirm.
3. Be sure your photo style is a match for your everyday lifestyle. Enlist a professional who works in your style casual and comfortable or posed and formal.
4. Location is everything. Select a location that is familiar to your children. At home, the park, your favorite location will make your kids feel more at ease.
5. Attitude is everything! Always be relaxed and flexible around kids even if they are rambunctious or not co-operating. When you have a professional photographer, be willing to leave the scene if necessary! Often the kids will behave better if the parents are not around.

Birthday Alarm

My quest to remember every birthday was improved upon this year when I enlisted the help of a few tools!
-I started out writing out all of my friends birthday's in a perpetual calendar. I like this Andy Warhol calendar for it's bright iconic images. It is great when I remember to look at it! It is certainly helpful to a certain extent and I continue to keep it up but this next tool was the key to keeping on top of these special days.
-Birthdayalarm.com is an easy to use website that will send you an email reminder for all of the special occasions that you want to commemorate. I set mine to send me a reminder ten days in advance and then again the day before. This way, I can send a card or gift and call! I like to enter my dates manually but there is also a tool to send your friends an email that will allow them to enter their birthday's automatically. Their e-card feature is really convenient but nothing beats a real card sent by snail-mail and a phone call.

Fashion Recycling

Here are a few trends to pull out of those dusty boxes in your closet and throw them on!

  1. Neon Clothing- 80’s---You can walk into American Apparel and see the various cotton neon t-shirts or shirt dresses that grace the racks. But unlike the 1980’s, you’re more likely to see these neon pieces as accessories under blazers, or with skinny black jeans and understated heels. The key is making the outfit pop with an understated edge.
  2. The MiniDress- 60-70’s---The minidress has a way of never leaving the fashion consciousness. This season, pair it with tights and flat shoes.
  3. Plaid: 1970’s & 90’s ---Young and old can pull this off. It is in all variations: button up shirts, tunics, dresses.
  4. Boyfriend Blazer: HELLO 80’S… looks great over a dress and gives a masculine feel. Roll the sleeves up if there is a lot of room and most of them have a cool lining to show off. Keep the blazer in a neutral...mostly seen in black and navy.
  5. Fur- No animal lovers, not the real thing. Back in the 70’s fur coats and vest were everywhere and they are BACK. Seen on Rachel Zoe and Kate Moss fur is attacking the streets. So pull our the fur coat or vest from the moth balls and strut yourself on the sidewalk.

Here are some trends you may want to put back into those boxes and save for another rainy day.

Next summer is all about a 90s revival: sportswear and grunge mixed with a massive shot of sex and glamour.

  1. Sports Wear/Cycling shorts- Set to be next summer's answer to leggings, the lycra knee-length short was seen on the most unlikely catwalks, Armani's showed them under a cocktail dress and Donna Karan had them worn under everything.
  2. Fanny Packs- Seen at Marc Jacobs, the pioneer of the 90s grunge movement. Worn slung low around the hips, they achieved an overall mood of sporty utilitarianism. Seen at Louis Vuitton as well. For a cheaper and more immediate version, hit American Apparel where they come in nylon and denim.
  3. Layers- With next season's sheer, floaty fabrics, we're being encouraged to layer up. Next season is said to be everything shear so most designers layerd T-shirts, vests, leggings and dresses.

Trends to throw away and never to be seen again.

  1. Phrase Graphic Tees: a graphic tee on a grown woman is an automatic fail. Stock up on your solids girls!
  2. Neon & Printed Stockings: You want to accentuate your legs not draw circus like attention to them.
  3. Lace: Lace gloves, lace shirts, lace dresses, cross them all off the list of trends you might’ve been hoping didn’t get the axe, this trend is dead.
  4. Uggs: Uggs are soft and warm in cold winters but, they aren’t waterproof in a snowstorm and definitely shouldn’t be worn in place of sandals with a miniskirt and tank top in the summer.

Paparazzi Posing!

It seems like there are cameras everywhere this time of year! There are parties with photographers, family and friends with cameras and, of course, it is also time to pose for the family Christmas card! I asked Steve Riley, former photographer of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Calendar, what I can do to look my best in each and every photo. Here are his tips:
-Practice finding your best side in the mirror at home or look at snapshots that you like of yourself. Movie Stars do it! Why can't you?
-Be sure to mattify your make up. Shiny, glossy and iridescent cosmetics are less flattering when digital cameras are around.
-Work on your captivating smile in the mirror. If it is hard for you, try this: breathe in and, just before the shot, breath out saying the word "yes" while smiling! This will create the look of a natural smile.
-Lean forward slightly at the waist and take the chin down. Event photographers always have their lights on high to prevent red-eye. This light creates shadows under the nose and chin but leaning forward and lowering your chin removes them.
-Attitude makes a difference. Have fun with the camera and pretend that you are on the red carpet at the Oscars vamping for your cheering fans.

I am so impressed with all mothers who juggle it all! Work, kids, fun, exercise. Holiday Travel Tips

I can't believe it but it is time to book your holiday travel if you haven't already! Did you know that the rates for flying during the holidays are 20% higher than normal? Crazy!
Here are a few quick tips for saving money on your holiday travel.
  • Consider using airfare tracking tools and signing up for fare change alerts at sites like FareCompare.com, Bing Travel, or Yapta.com.
  • Be flexible! If you have flexibility with your travel days, you are pretty much guaranteed savings. Avoid peak holiday travel dates, especially the day before or the day after a holiday. Use the search engines that feature a "flexible date" search which will search for the cheapest fares over a range of dates. Kayak.com, Orbitz.com and Travelocity.com all offer one.
  • Use an alternate airport if you can. Using a smaller alternate airport in the area you are flying to can really save you money. Even you need to drive a bit further, the smaller airports are often less crowded and easier to navigate.

Hanging Pictures

Here are some great tips and ideas for hanging pictures straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

I’ve been living in my house for 2 years now, and we still have pictures on the floor that have not been hung. It’s hard to decide what artwork goes where, how high it should be hung, and how not to have lots of unnecessary holes in your walls? I’ve looked into a few tips for how to hang artwork and hopefully this will also get me and my husband motivated to hanging those pictures that are lying around.

Things I’ll need before I begin:

Measuring tape

Pencil

Nails/ hooks

Hammer

Level

(All can be bought at Lowes or Elliot’s Hardware)

Decorator’s general rule of thumb is to hang artwork at eye level. The average human eye level is 57”. So the center point of the picture or grouping should be right at your eye level. Eye level is usually considered from the standing position, but if the majority of your time is spent being seated in a room, consider eye level from a seated position.

As for physically hanging pictures of the wall, I’ll need to look to the nearest home improvement store for hanging kits. I’ve found this Bob Vila Wall Picture Hanging tool kit that can be bought online at Overstock.com for $15. It includes everything I’ll need.

Nails are great because they are easy to install and are small enough that they won’t create large holes. Hammer nails into the wall at a 45-degree angle. Keep in mind your picture’s weight determines what size hook you will be using. Sometimes if your picture is very large, two nail-and-hooks will be needed

Choose smaller pictures for narrow walls and larger pictures for wider walls. When hanging art around furniture, make sure the pictures is not wider than the piece of furniture.

A level is great for making sure your photo is hanging parallel to the floor and not uneven.

Grouping pictures can be quite difficult. Choosing an odd number of artwork is best for balance. Lay them out before hand to get the right arrangement. Measure each piece of artwork and use tape on the wall to be a template for where each piece is going to be placed. This way you can play around with combinations until you find one that catches your eye. Use a measuring tape to make sure the distance between each piece is equal. You don’t want to upset the balance.

Lighting also plays an important role in enhancing your pictures. When a picture demands more attention, lighting should be used to enhance its beauty.

There is a new way to display your artwork called the Walker System. This new system makes it easy for you to rearrange your artwork and also have no more holes in your walls. Durable hooks attach to your molding to hang your pictures. www.walkerdisplay.com

Sometimes I worry about what happens if I put a picture up and don’t like where it is, ending up with an ugly unnecessary hole. Well to repair the holes myself, I can apply drywall compound over the surface of the hole, no more than 1/8 inch thick. Let it dry completely. Then scrape the surface smooth with a putty knife and apply a second coat. I’ll repeat the process until I’ve built up a compound a little higher than the wall surface. Lastly, I’ll sand the patch and blend into the wall. Voila!

Picking the Perfect Paint Color!

Here are some great ideas from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog on picking the perfect paint color:

Got a new wall color in mind? Here are a few pointers to ensure the perfect paint color:
  • Consider the "mood" of the room. Certain colors evoke certain feelings.
-Yellow is cheery and warm. Some research says that it can increase your metabolism!
-Red is stimulating, strong and dramatic and it is associated with warmth, love and comfort
-Blue is calming and serene. It is often used in an office as research shows that it increases productivity.
-Green symbolizes nature and is thought to relieve stress and possibly increase your reading ability.
  • Use matte or flat finishes to hide imperfections but use a glossy finish when you need to reflect light. If you would like to bounce more light in the room but love flat finish walls, consider using a glossy finish on the ceiling.
  • To make your ceilings look higher, paint your trim and ceiling in a lighter tone of the same color.

Tailgate Time!

Here are some great Tailgate tips straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog

Now that the NFL football season is in full swing, we want to make sure that you are prepared for the tailgating party! Football and tailgating go hand in hand . Tailgating is a great American pastime where cooking, eating, drinking and watching football take place in the stadium parking lot. It is the best way to celebrate and socialize with friends and beat traffic too! The key to successful tailgating is the plan ahead. Here is my list of tailgate party essentials:
Cooler - a well stocked cooler is a must! Be sure to keep food and drinks separate.
Drinks - pack a variety of drinks unless you know exactly what your "team" will want.
Grill - I love the Freedom Grill because it is so easy to transport
Food - the most important ingredient is the meat! Hot dogs, hamburgers and barbecue are staples at tailgate parties.
Music - be sure to bring something that you can play music from!
Bags for trash
Can opener
Bottle opener
Sharp knife
Matches
Ice
Wet Wipes
Folding Chairs
Canopy - Ez-Up makes a great tent for tailgating rain or shine!
A football - warm up for watching!
Clothing to show your team spirit
Decorations - If you want to be the best tailgate party in the lot, be sure to decorate with your team's paraphernalia, team colors and music!

Halloween Tablescapes

Here are some great tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog on Halloween Tablescapes!

You all know how much I love tablescaping! Here is the Halloween table that I set for my sister, Kari's, supper club dinner this week. We had so much fun setting the table together. We started with a black lace spider web lace tablecloth. It was the perfect back drop for the orange plates that she already had. Halloween bandanas from the craft store were used as napkins and we added little glittered insects to each place setting. She served her famous turkey chili which she renamed "brain soup" for the occasion. The centerpiece was made up of two black glitter candleabra and some Martha Stewart brand glittered skulls and bones. No flowers were needed here! Send me photos of your tablescapes.... askkim@kimberlyschlegel.com.

Children's Birthday Tips

Here are some great Children's Birthday Party tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

Today is my son, JR's, 2nd Birthday so I am going to share my favorite Children's birthday party tips!
  1. Always keep in mind that the party is for the enjoyment of the kids! Your primary goal is the make the children feel special. Get the guest of honor involved in the planning and ask them what kind of party they would like. Do they want pink balloons or pony rides? Do they want hamburgers or hot dogs? Cupcakes or cookies?
  2. Don't stress! Just remember that they are going to remember if they had fun, not whether or not your house was spotless!
  3. Enlist the help of some big people! Don't try to host a children's birthday party alone. It takes a team to pull off an event like this because needs to keep an eye on the little ones at all times. Encourage parents to stay with their children but you must plan on feeding them too!
  4. A Birthday party is a great place to re-enforce the manners that you are teaching your child at home. Include everyone in your child's class. This is not a time to risk hurting people's feelings as it is a celebration! When opening gifts, teach your child to make the appropriate "thank yous" whether they like the gift or not! Be sure that you child writes thank you notes to everyone who attends. This will be the start of a great life long habit!
  5. Keep the kids busy! Activities are your best friend at a child's birthday party. Be sure that you keep them entertained to keep them out of trouble. One idea that I love is to copy a coloring page that fits your theme onto legal size paper and ask the kids to color one that they can later use as their place mat.

It will be accompanied with the poetry of Ogden Nash. Dallas composer, Simon Sargon's The Town Musicians of Bremen will also be featured. How to Win a Halloween Costume Contest

Here are some great tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog on winning a Halloween Costume Contest:

I am typically not very competitive but I love the idea of winning a Halloween Costume Contest. My parents won when my son, their first grandchild, was born. He was born a few days before Halloween so they wore baseball caps that said "I am a grandma" and "I am a grandpa" and then developed photos of my son on 16 x 20 foam board and wore them around their necks! They were so cute and everyone was impressed with their creativity! Here are few tips so that you can take home the prize:
  • Before you begin planning your contest, find out how you are going to be judged and what the prize categories are. Also ask about the judges!
  • Costumes that make people laugh or that are based on current events are always a hit.
  • Do research on the web and find out what details could set your costume apart from the crowd.
  • Know your strengths. If you can sew, then put that skill to use. If you are good with tools, then add on bells and whistles!
  • Get into character. Have fun with your costume and act the part. Take on the voice, tone and personality of your costume. It isn't just what you wear but how you wear it!

Candle Care 101

Here are some great tips on candle care from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

  • Whether it is a party with friends or a relaxing evening at home, nothing sets the mood better than candles. So here is what I call Candle Care 101:
  • A little trick to extend the life of your candle: wrap the wick in saran wrap and place your candle in the refrigerator of a couple of hours before burning. A cool candle will burn more slowly. This is really helpful during a long dinner party!
  • Long wicks create black smoke that can mark your ceiling. To avoid this, trim wicks to a 1/2 inch before you light them.
  • To remove wax that has collected at the bottom of your glass votive, stick your votive in the freezer and after it freezes, the wax will crumble easily.
  • If wax drips onto your fine linens, simply warm up the wax with a hair dryer then cover it with a cloth that you don't mind throwing away. Run a warm iron over the cloth and wax will adhere to the cloth! If that doesn't work, check craft or fabric stores for wax removing products.
Remember to keep candles away from foliage and drapes as well as children and pets.

Candy Apples Made Easy

Here's a great tip from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog on how to make Candy Apples, the easy way!

Looking for a fun weekend activity? I love the idea of making candy apples for my son and his friends. It is the perfect way to start a new family tradition and to satisfy the sweet tooth that we all have this time of year! Here is a simple and sweet recipe that I know you will enjoy:

Combine 2 14 oz bags of caramels (the unwrapped kind of course!) and 1/4 cup of heavy cream in a sauce pan on the stove. Continue to stir for about ten minutes of until the caramels have melted. This can burn so you do need to keep an eye on it.

Let it cool for only a few minutes while you add popsicle sticks to 8 Granny Smith Apples. Granny Smith Apples are the perfect match for the sweet caramel because they are a bit tart. You need to be a bit tough with the sticks to get them in but just keep wiggling and they will work.

Cover the apples in the caramel right on the stove top and then dip them into a tray of sprinkles for little bit of extra pizazz. You could lay them on their side of stand them up straight depending on how you would like to present them.

Let them cool and then dig in!

Pumpkin Decorating Ideas!

Here are some great Pumpkin Decorating Ideas straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

If you are like me you are dreading cleaning up the pumpkin carving mess that will certainly happen when the jack-0-lantern carving begins. I knew that there must be an easy way to avoid cutting into our pumpkins all together this year so I have explored a few options. Take your pick and please send me photos of your pumpkin art!
-Kids will love the Mr. Potato Head Pumpkin Kits! They are soooooo cute! The kit comes with everything you will need to make pumpkin pirate, princess, ninja, witch or clown. They retail for anywhere from $9 to $12 which is a bargain in my opinion because there is no clean up! You simply stick they eyes, nose, mouth, ears and meet into a small pumpkin and, voila, a mess-less jack-o-lantern!
-If you love a traditional Jack-o-lantern but don't want to carve then pull out the black duct tape and cut away! Using sharp sewing scissors, cut the duct tape into the shapes you need: two triangles for the eyes, another for the nose and a crescent shape for the mouth. It is easy and simple!
-Turning a pumpkin on it's side is perfect for those of you who like to color outside the lines. Grab some permanent markers or paints and turn your pumpkin over so that the stem is facing you. Using the stem as the nose, paint eyes and a mouth on your pumpkin. You could top it off with a set of mop strings on top as hair.
-Remember the plastic spider rings that we all used to wear as kids? They make perfect pumpkin decor now! Make small one inch slices into the pumpkin and insert the rings into them so that it looks like the spiders are crawling around it. Top it off with some fake spider webs and you have a creepy crawly pumpkin!
-Stencils are a great way to go if you don't have a creative bone in your mummy....uh, body! Check out these at Better Homes and Gardens.

Pumpkin Season!

Here are some great tips straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

Picking the perfect pumpkin is actually easier than it sounds! A trip to the Pumpkin Patch is a fun filled rite of passage for the Fall Season but how do you know which pumpkin to purchase? Here are few simple tips to help:
  • Select a pumpkin that is completely orange. A partially green pumpkin might not ripen any further.
  • A ripe pumpkin has a hard shell taht does not dent or scratch easily when pressing on it with a thumbnail. Do this on the bottom of the fruit.
  • Examine the entire pumpkin carefully for soft spots. If you find even one soft spot, go on the the next pumpkin.
  • Size is an important factor in pumpkin picking. Medium pumpkins are best for carving a jack-o-lantern. Small pumpkins are best for cooking.
  • Selecting the shape is a matter of personal preference. Some like tall and others like round! Often, people select shapes to fit the carving patterns they will use. As you make your selection, try to picture your carving on the pumpkin and use it's shape for inspiration.
  • Check the pumpkin for cracks or splits.
Shopping for a pumpkin can be scary! Here are few tips to take the edge off:
  • Bring a small wagon with you. It is a much easier way to haul both pumpkins and tired kids!

Halloween Invitation Ideas

Here are some great ideas for Halloween Invitations straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

1. Evite has adorable options for Trick or Treating parties this year. Evite is a simple and quick alternative to a printed invitation. It is more festive than sending a regular email and but less exciting than an invitation sent by snail mail.

2. For the "digital-do-it-yourselfers" out there, check out Martha Stewart's Pumpkin-top invitations. I love how professional the invitations look but they do take a bit of time to print out and assemble.

Another elegant alternative it the Light up the Night invitation from Michaels.

3. For my crafty friends, I recommend putting together something a bit more daunting. A simple black or white gift box with black filler is the perfect container to deliver these gruesome fake fingers to your friends. I found these on Amazon.com and think that they are perfectly gross! Affix a label with all of the event details to the inside of the lid of the box and another label to the outside with the recipients name on it. This invitation will really work best if you can hand deliver it. I know it sounds like a lot of effort but it will certainly make an impact and set the tone for a bewitching evening.

Don't forget to spell out the invitation in a spooky style. Try to incorporate words like haunting, bewitching, goulish, spook-tacular, and harrowing. Here are few examples of verbiage ideas for your invitation:

Calling all Ghosts and Goblins and Witches
Please join the Whitmans for some Halloween mishief.

Are you looking forward to an evening of fright?
Then please come and join us on Halloween Night.

*and instead of asking for a simple RSVP, you should write:

We are dying to hear from you....please reply.

Teeth Whitening Tips!

Here are some great tips straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog on how you can enhance your smile!

There is no feature more beautiful than a smile and the key to smiling more often is confidence! This explains why Americans have spent over $1.7 Billion dollars on teeth whitening products and services in the last year! I believe that a whiter smile can boost self esteem. Many people say that it can boost your image professionally as well. Whitening techniques vary from laser whitening, trays and gels, strips and even on the go pens.

The best results come from laser whitening which is performed by a cosmetic dentist. It can make your teeth 4 to 6 shades lighter within an hour after visiting your dentist! It is expensive though and typically runs over $1000! The only potential side effect is sensitivity.

The next most effective way to whiten your teeth is by using trays and gels. Your dentist can make a set of trays that fit your teeth with a mold. You then add a gel with a bleaching agent to the trays and leave them in for up to an hour. You will need to repeat this for a few weeks before you see the results. I do this every once in a while and sometimes my gums swell up!

Whitening strips can be found in drug stores everywhere now. They take a bit longer to produce results but they are so easy to find and are very inexpensive compared to the other treatments.

The Zoom Whitening Pen is a click pen than can be taken in your purse or pocket and applied after you eat or drink something that stains your teeth. I dries quickly but comes at a price. A set of two is $45 but each pen lasts for about 30 applications.

Of course, after you whiten your teeth you need to do your best to keep them that way! The obvious staining culprits are tobacco, coffee, tea, and colas but did you know that grape juice, red wine, blueberries, soy sauce, and curry can stain your teeth too! Basically, if it can stain your clothing or carpet, it can stain your teeth! The best way to avoid stains from these things is to drink them through a straw which reduces your teeth's exposure to them and brush your teeth right after you have them.

Self Tanner Tips!

Need a good self tanner? Here's some great advice straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

I have heard more Self-Tanner Horror stories than I have Halloween stories! I knew that there must be a way to achieve the beautiful "kissed by the sun" look without the streaking and orange palms that come along with the self tanning experiments. The first think that you must consider is whether you really want to look like Jennifer Aniston? She always looks like she just returned from a relaxing vacation in paradise. Honestly, the gorgeous fair skin of stars like Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Liv Tyler and others can be very flattering as well. If you decide that you want to be bronze, here a few safe ways to get the look:

Spray Tanning and Airbrush Tanning are all the rage in Hollywood and here at home. The results last for anywhere from 5 to 10 days and you can get a spray tan in a booth at a tanning salon or a professional can spray you by hand. One Dallas hot spot, Bella Vita Rejuvenation Center in Preston Center does the Sun FX airbrushing by hand. After selecting your depth of color, they spray you with the non-chemical, non-streak potion and in 5 minutes, you are golden! This is a great option to help you prepare for a special occasion but be sure to do it the day before your event, not the day of.

Tanning Towelettes have gotten more and more popular as they are easier to use. Oprah recommends the Tan Towel. They are easy to use and you will see less streaking. They can leave your elbows and ankles a bit darker though!

Tanning lotions are wonderful if you use them properly. I love Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer and recommend it everyone! At only $7.99 it is a lot less expensive than a vacation to a beachy resort! It is made for Fair/Medium/Tan skin tones and contains Antioxidants and Vitamin E. It is very natural looking and impossible to mess up because the tan appears gradually. If you use it everyday for a week, you will have the perfect tan. When I use it every day, it can get too dark so I alternate days. My sister says that I smell bad on the days that I use it so I try to use it at night so that only my husband suffers!

Preparing your skin for a faux-tan is the most important part of the process. Here are few tips:
  • Exfoliate your skin everyday for three days before you use self-tanner.
  • Liberally moisturize your skin everyday for at least three days before you apply self-tanner but skip the lotions on the day you tan.
  • Tanning lotions are easier to use than foams.
  • If you have streaks, lemon juice might help lighten them.
  • Picking the perfect color can be a challenge so do a small test spot when trying out a new product.
  • My roommate in college used self tanner every few days and she always wore disposable rubber hospital gloves to apply it. It really worked! She never had orange palms or knuckles!

Red Lipstick!

Here are some great tips, from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog, on how to pick out the perfect shade of red lipstick!

Everyone can wear this Fall's hottest accessory: Red Lips! It really can be beautiful on anyone if you know how to wear it right!

Not all reds are alike and picking the perfect color is key. You must consider your underlying skin tone.
  • If your base skin color has yellow tones, a warmer shade of red with brown undertones is perfect for you. Look for something that you might describe as "brick red."
  • If your natural skin has red or pink undertones, you will want to lean towards reds with a pink or blue base.
  • Warm olive skin tones, like mine, look best in a warm red to match. An orange or golden tone will work.
  • Women with dark skin look amazing in a bright fuchsia-like red.
  • Look for a long-wearing lipstick as the bold red is more noticeable as it starts to fade than a pale color is.
Even if you pick the perfect tone, red can still be tricky so here a few application tips:
  • Start with a lip moisturizer as a base.
  • Apply a thin layer of your foundation or powder to help set the red lipstick. This will also help it last longer.
  • Line your lips with a neutral lip liner (not a red one!) and then color them in with the same liner.
  • Apply red lipstick lightly with a makeup brush so that you have an even application.
  • Lightly blot your lips with a tissue after you have applied the lipstick.
Keeping your red lipstick from smearing is easy!
  • Do as the beauty queens do and put a touch of vaseline on your front teeth.
Finish off your red-lip look with clean natural skin and mascara. Avoid too much blush, eyeliner or shadow or you will look overdone.

For a more gentler look, combine your best shade of red with a bit of vaseline or clear gloss for a natural rosy gloss look.

Mind your Manners Boys and Girls!

Here are Nine easy manners to teach your child straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's blog:

1. Do not interrupt others while they are speaking. Gently tell them to wait until someone is done speaking, and then ask their question. Be sure and give your child your full attention when you are done speaking, as to reinforce the positive behavior of waiting his/her turn. While children are patiently waiting, hold their hand to let them know you are aware of their presence.

2. No name calling. Whatever the reason, name-calling is wrong. Ask your child to explain what the behavior is about someone that bothers them. Also, don’t accept a child saying “I was just joking.” It’s never a joke when someone is made to feel rejected or ridiculed. Voice your anger and disappointment if your child has taunted someone. Have her apologize to her victim and perhaps others.

3. Say, "Please" and "Thank you." In addition, if they are thanked, then say, "You're welcome". The parent needs to say please, thank you, excuse me, I’m sorry, as well. The child will pick up on the parent saying them.

5. Clean up after yourself. Explain that the child cannot continue on to the next activity until the mess is clean. STICK TO YOUR WORD!

6. Good sportsmanship. After playing a game (sports, cards, board game), no matter the outcome, be pleasant. If your child wins, tell him/her to not gloat or show off, but to be kind. If they lose, don't get mad, but be a good sport as well and tell the other child "good game.”

7. Take compliments courteously. A child is never too young to learn how to graciously accept a compliment. Our tendency is to downplay a compliment with a comment such as, “it was nothing.” While in our mind we may feel that this is the appropriate response what we are really doing is being rude to the person offering the comment. Encourage them to look the person in the eye and respond with a meaningful thank you. One of the easiest ways to teach this skill is to role play with them a situation where they might receive a compliment.

8. Opening doors for others. When going into buildings, allow elders to go first and open the door for them. When preceding others into a building, don't let the door slam in the face of those behind, but hold the door until the person behind can grab it. Also teach your children that if someone holds the door for them, then remember to say "thank you."

9. Social Etiquette. Start kids young with learning how to set the table appropriately, and then talk to them about general etiquette rules. Approach manners as a game. One night a week, try to have a somewhat more formal dinner. Try dressing up, serve a special meal, and expect more formal manners. That will help improve your kids' social graces. Work on one social skill at a time. Don't overburden a child with too many lessons at once.

Fall Fashion in 90 degree Texas heat

The weather is screaming Summer but every clothing store is well into Fall! How should you dress! Here are a few tips on transitioning into Fall with out burning up:
  • Layers: Layer your cardigans cool fall nights or a cool movie theatre. Cotton cardigans are perfect for layering as they are breathable. Layer tanks, tees and long sleeved T-shirts underneath to create interesting color combinations.

  • The Classic Sheath Dress: Choose a cotton dress that you can easily layer with a cardigan. Adding a belt and fall shoes can help with the transition. Stick with warmer tones and leave the brights for summer and spring.

  • Platform Ankle Booties: Wear these trendy short booties with skirt and dresses while the temperatures are warm and add opaque tights as it gets cooler. Platforms are easier to wear than stilettos, even if you are not one for heels, so you should give them a try!

  • Cropped Pants: While it is hot, cropped pants look great with flats and a simple shirt. As the weather gets cooler, tuck them into your knee high boots!

  • Scarves: A light silk scarf is a great piece to layer. Lay it and loosely around your neck. Wear them in great fall colors with your lighter clothing.

How to Shop Your Closet!

Here are some great tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

1.) Take Closet Inventory: Make sure your basics are covered: black tank, white oxford, nice pencil skirt, cardigan, black pants, nice suit jacket, etc. Find out what basics you have and then you will know what you truly need. So get back to basics and find fun in accessories!

2.) Accessorize: Use your more daring accessories to liven up your wardrobe basics. These can include bold scarves, colorful handbags, costume jewelry, brooches, and more. These are also easier to store than sweaters! An entire new outfit could be just a silk scarf away!

3.) Use it or Lose it: If you have it in your closet, find a way to incorporate it, or remove it from the racks to freshen up your storage space and make room for new and wearable pieces. Also, one persons toss is another persons treasure, please be sure to donate unwanted clothing and accessories to charity before you place anything in the trash!

4.) Throw out multiples: If you have multiple pieces of the same look, pick your favorite and get rid of some of the other garments to help yourself make room for new things. You never know where your new look may take you (and do you truly need 4 green t-shirts?).

5.) Repair what you have: If you want to make the most of what you have, make sure it is all in it’s best shape. Get rid of scuffs on old pairs of shoes & leather handbags, repair and reinforce old high heels, mend any holes and tears in clothing garments, and freshen up your sterling silver jewelry (* the best way is to scrub with a soft toothbrush dipped in warm water that's been spiked with a few drops of dishwashing liquid).

6.) Edit & Organize your closet: Sometimes shopping your closet is as easy as making the items that you have accessible. Get rid of the articles you no longer wear, or store them in a place that isn’t mixed in with your day-to-day outfits. Also, color coordinating helps. Organize your clothing dark to light, then, when you are looking for that light blue silk ruffled top you bought last year, you have somewhat of an idea of where it could be in the color line!

7.) Change the look of things: Don’t be afraid to take chances and substitute the original purposes of garments with a fresh new perspective. Wear a dress as a tunic by shortening it with a statement-making belt. Take a fun summer dress and wear it into fall with a cute pair of colorful tights. Pair a suit jacket with a pair of jeans and a tank for a chic weekend look and be sure to mix and match different prints in the same type of color palettes.

Men's Fall Fashion Trends

Here are some great tips on Men's Fall Fashion Trends straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

1.) The V-Neck: The V-Neck cut had a strong presence in the fall menswear collections. The distinctive neckline was shown layered over t-shirts and under long coats. The V-Neck was shown in a vast array of prints and took on many different forms: a button down cardigan, a sweater with a plunging zipper, the classic argyle, simple t-shirts, and cashmere cuts trimmed out in two-tone hues. As a sweater, the classic neckline is a great “go to” piece for layering over a t-shirt this winter and fall. Look for the neckline on this autumn's long overcoats and trenches.

2.) The Double Breasted Suit/Jacket: The double breasted long overcoat seemed the favored cut of the menswear suit collections this fall. Menswear went modern this fall and suits are favoring a slimmer look. It seems men are ready to show off their athletic shapes in cuts with longer lapels, slim waists, side vents, and broad shoulders. The heavy, larger suit coats seem to be replaced with the slimmer fitting double-breasted cuts, but as style.com put it best, "while the offsprings' offerings sport a trimmer, more youthful fit, they've got enough old-school detailing to ensure they'll age as well as the guy wearing them."

3.) Colors: Dark colors were favored again in menswear to suit the melancholy of autumn. Blacks, midnight blues, and greens, were broken up with dashes of deep purples and dark reds throughout the collections. Many designers experimented with monochrome outfits in black and shades of grays, layering using different fabrics and textures but following the same monochromatic guideline.

4.) Versatility- Day to Night dressing: The versatility of fabric and texture was a big emphasis this season in menswear (clothes that can take you from work to out on the town). Patterns were mixed and matched: distressed leather was paired with classic tailored tweed and strong structured jackets done in softer fabrics like cashmere, flannel, and velvet. Louis Vuitton had a leather jacket that was reversible with cashmere on the inside, exemplifying this changeability in menswear. Thus, classic menswear cuts were matched with and softer fabrics, to make comfort and practicality priorities as well this season. (Dries Van Noten)

5.) Plaids: Plaid is also back in a big way, from gingham to buffalo patterns. This season, the classic print is more prevalent in prints of black, white, red, and blue. Dress up a basic plaid button down by layering the piece with a gray cashmere sweater, or purchase a classic plaid blazer or long coat to pair with denim jeans. This look of high-and low is what makes menswear anything but over-plaid this fall. (Bottega Veneta)

6.) Accessories for Men: (big!!) Accessories for men were extremely popular in the fall collections. Classic accessories like the gentleman’s umbrella, structured briefcases, and scarves populated the runways. Up in sales are statement-making designer sneakers as well as hats, gloves, and long scarves in various fabrics and color combinations. Scarves were deemed the “must-have” accessory for men this fall and they “aren’t just to keep your neck warm anymore!” (J.Crew)

Accessories are an easy way to freshen up your daily look with an item you can wear each and every day, a true investment! They are also a quick and easy way to separate you from the rest. Throw on an eye-catching belt or a pair of vintage sunglasses and you have your own new and individual pieces paired with your fall basics. Hats: narrow-brimmed fedoras, boleros, knit caps Scarves: Add a bold pattern or pop of color to dark colored clothing attire (ex. Cashmere Scarf worn draped open around the neck)

7.) Military Look: With jackets and strong shoulders, this “resilient” look surfaced in nearly every fall collection. With leather motorcycle jackets, “bomber” jackets, and apparel accents like epaulets and zippers, the military look was prevalent across the boards. Tweedy jackets, checked shirts for that 1950's, early 60's “University” look. Or make them snap to attention when you sport a military style jacket with your jeans.

Women's Fall Fashion Trends

Here are some great tips straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

1.) Bold Color: Color painted the runways this season with vibrant pops in unexpected places. Purple was one of fall’s favorites. Wear it in the form of alligator pumps, a silk purple blouse, or an amethyst cuff. You don’t have to wear the bold color head-to-toe, one vibrant pop will do!

2.) Statement Jewelry: Freshen up your wardrobe basics with an eye-catching necklace with oversize stone beading or an intricate geometric design. Costume jewelry is a definite fall staple. So find that interesting piece that glams up your basic little black dress and certainly don't be afraid to make a statement this season.

3.) Feminine Chic: Fall was very feminine in both cuts and patterns. Vivid floral fabrics made quite the declaration in fall collections and were often paired with traditional menswear fabrics like plaid and wool. Or, pick your favorite tweed fabric in the highly favored feminine suit cuts for fall which included slim-tailored and figure-flattering cropped jackets and high-waist pencil skirts.

4.) Mix & Match: Be your own canvas this autumn! Mix different fabrics this season for a look that doesn’t try too hard. Whether it be wool with silks, tweeds with satin, patent and suede, or sequins by day, liven up any outfit with bold accessories and a touch of the extraordinary. This fall, it’s all in the details; whether they are a pair of feathered pumps by Alexander McQueen, an intricate jeweled neckline on a basic sweater, or a new clutch in an exotic print, add an eye-catching pop to your basics that begs for that second glance!

5.) The Jacket: Make sure you have some great jacket staples this fall. Whether they are the chic blazer style, a short coat, the trendy military cut, or a confident shouldered jacket, these styles are versatile and essential to your autumn wardrobe. Purchase smart and find one that looks just as great with jeans as it does over your little black cocktail dress. Fall’s flirtation with jackets makes day to night a breeze this season!

6.) Tights: An easy way to freshen up your fall look is with a pair of colored or detailed tights. They can easily dress up or dress down an outfit and can be a great way to add color to your wardrobe without going overboard. Also, an affordable trend, they aren’t a big investment item and if you aren’t into color next season, you won't feel too guilty storing these away in a drawer!

7.) Sweater Dressing: Find a longer sweater that looks just as great with tights as it does over jeans. You can accessorize the sweater with a fantastic belt, or wear it over a pair of skinny black pants. Amongst other 80’s trends like sequins and strong shoulders, this look was all over the fall runways.

8.) Texture Tells All: Gathered fabric and accordion pleating were prevalent in the fall collections. It’s all in the details this autumn and the understated elegance that the fabric’s finishing touches can bring. Lead designers like Donna Karan were fans of the origami pleating which offers a big statement without revealing too much.

9.) The Belt: Don’t miss out on a belt this season! They can change the entire look of any outfit in a beat and are quite the commodity this fall. Go fun with a large patent leather belt in a bold color, or venture understated with a thinner belt with vintage-inspired buckling or detailed hardware.

10.) The FUR-ishing Touch: Add a touch of fur to glam up any fall look! Whether it be a fur collar or faux fur stole, it’s a great way to add glamour in one simple step. Faux furs for fall went fun and are available in a broad array of colors!

Energy Saving Tips!

Save Energy Everyday!!

Here are some great tips straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog on saving energy in your home!

Houses account for 35-percent of all greenhouse-gas emissions and 32-percent of air pollutants and if you don't care about that, imagine all of the money you could save by taking just a few simple steps.

-Unplugging your electronics such as your cell phone charger can eliminate 5 to 10 percent of your electric bill!

-Shut down your computer when you are not using it. Set your computer to enter sleep mode automatically after thirty minutes of inactivity.

-Lower the setting on your hot water heater to from 140 to 120 -the minimum to guard against bacteria- and you can save six to ten percent in energy costs according to the EPA.

-Treat your furnace and air conditioning units to regular makeovers. Change the filters once a month and give them an annual service call. The dirt and gunk in the air filters makes the systems work harder and there fore adds to your heating and cooling bills!

-Installing a high performance shower head can not only transform your shower into a spa bu it also uses 1.5 gallons of water per minute as opposed to 2.5 gallons used by an older model! A family of four could save $135 a year on your electricity costs according to the Department of Energy

-Use Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs and you could save $30 per bulb over it's lifetime which averages 416 days. That will add up if you change all of your bulbs!

If you want to put your home to the test you can visit www.energystar.gov and go to the Home Advisor. After you take the test, the website will give you a customized list of things that you can do to save energy. You can also hire an energy auditor to come thru your home and give you a very thorough investigation.

There are many tax incentive and rebate programs for energy saving home improvements. Check out your states programs at www.aceee.org/energy/state.

Home Decor

Dress up the rooms in your house for less!

Here are some more great tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

Adding glamour to your home is simple according to interior designer, Jan Showers and her new book Glamorous Rooms. Below are a few of Jan's tips mixed with a few of my suggestions:

Jan's Tip: Interesting Art adds so much to any space and fortunately, is available at many price points.

My suggestion: Purchase blank canvases and have fun making your own creations. You can also staple an interesting fabric over a stretcher and hang it to add pattern to your room.

Jan's Tip: Nothing adds more shimmer, shine and glamour to a room than a mirror. They should be placed strategically either to reflect something wonderful or in a room with very few windows, a mirror can create the illusion of one.

My suggestion: If you don't have the space for a large mirror, add small mirrored elements such as mirrored place mats on the table or mirrored light sconces.

Z Gallerie's Lucerne Sconce in White can add luminous glamour to your home for only $14.95! The glossy white frame and simple mirror are perfect for any setting. I love putting candles in front of a mirror because it gives off such a beautiful light.

Jan's Tip: There is nothing like books in a room to create character and glamour. I like them stacked on tables and even on the floor under tables. Used bookstores are a great fun because you may find a real treasure such as an out of print photography, art or design book.

My suggestion: Keep all of your books in one room and organize them by size or color. Mix in interesting mementos from your shopping excursions or travels.

Jan's Tip: Use glass for color and sparkle. Most upholstery fabrics have little or no sheen so wonderful collections of glass can add this element.

My suggestion: Keep an eye out for interesting accents that catch light. I love the way Jan uses beautiful murano glass pieces but you can use your own collections to achieve the same look.

Jan's Tip: Lamps are the jewelry of any room. You should buy the best ones you can afford. Jan loves glass, ceramic and sculptural brass lamps. Lamp shades are very important. Lamps also provide the most flattering light as they are at eye level. Overhead lighting makes people look tired.

My suggestion: Look for lamps at garage sales and flea markets. It is relatively inexpensive to have them re-wired and to have a wonderful custom lamp shade made.

Check out Jan's book for more of her wonderful and sophisticated tips and ideas to add glamour to your home.

Tips on Toasting

How to give the Perfect Toast!

Here are some great tips straight from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

Today is my husband's best friend, Jon Bronson's, birthday and when I think of Jon, I think of someone who can make a fabulous toast! He is known for his hilarious roasts and charming toasts and he gave my all-time favorite toast at our wedding where he was the Best Man. In honor of his birthday, I thought I should write some toasting tips for the rest of us who do not share Jon's natural gift of gab!

My favorite resource for Tips on Toasting is Town & Country Magazines wonderful book Toasts for Every Occasion. Here are a few of the books best tips:

-The biggest mistake a person makes when giving a toast is talking for tooooooo long! Keep it short and sweet. Under two minutes is ideal.

-Remember to talk about the honoree. Many people talk about themselves instead of the person they want to toast.

-Make it personal but do not bring up inside jokes that the other guests will not understand. Always be kind, gracious and flattering.

-Arrive prepared and speak slowly and deliberately.

-Stand up straight and take a deep breath before you begin.

-Hold your glass of champagne in front of you for the duration of your toast and raise it up higher at the end. Everyone should stand while you raise your glass except for the guest of honor.

Bargain Shopping!

Shop the Top! Flea Market Tips:

Flea Markets are a great resource for finding unique and well priced things for your home. Round Top Texas is famous for its wonderful flea market. People come from around the world for this fantastic bi-annual event. One of my favorite Dallas/Fort Worth event planning companies wants you to join them to "Shop The Top" in style. They have organized an amazing three day shopping event that includes transportation and assistance with your purchases among other things. For more information call 972-380-4233.

Here are some great tips from Kimberly's Blog to help you prepare for your flea market adventure:

-Dress Down! Don't show up in your Sunday best or you will pay more for your items! Also be sure to go prepared with a hat, jacket and sunscreen.

-Arrive Early but don't Leave Early. If you want to have a great selection arrive to the event as it is starting. There are many professional designers and artists who wait at the entrance gate to many markets so that they have a chance at the best items. But don't be intimidated by their eagerness. There are always great items and deals to be found. The best prices are often found in the final hours of the event when dealers are dreading packing up their belongings again. Make them an offer that is more appealing than packing and you might leave with a treasure.

-Take Cash. Make a budget for yourself and take that amount in cash. Small bills only though! One, Five, Ten and Twenty dollar bills are appropriate.

-Hunt for Treasures. The best deals are found at the dealers who spread their wares out on an old blanket or folding table. The dealers who spend a great deal of time arranging their booth and merchandising their goods typically have higher prices.

-Bring Plastic Bags. Most dealers don't have bags for you to carry your things in. You might also want to bring some bubble wrap or a small rolling cart.

-Drive the appropriate vehicle. Don't take your tiny convertible if you are planning to purchase a dining table! Borrow a truck or van if you don't have one of your own and arrive prepared with packing materials such as blankets, bubble wrap, tape and boxes.

-Be Prepared. Call ahead of information on the hours of operation, parking, and entrance fees. Always keep your mobile phone with you and ware comfortable clothing and shoes.

Getting Organized!

Organizing Your Home Closet!

Here are a few of her helpful tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

1. Start Small....

Organizing your entire closet can seem overwhelming so start with a small project instead. Catherine suggests starting with your purses for example. Discard or give away any that you don't like anymore, are in need of repair, or are out of style. Then take what is left and organize it in a way that makes sense to you - either put all day purses together and evening purses together or organize them color. This will allow you to easily access what you love and make you feel good about your outfits.

2. Change out of season items....

You don't want to be sorting through summer cotton dresses when what you really need is a cashmere sweater. Store out of season items on a top shelf or under the bed. That way, when you are trying to get ready in a hurry, you only see the items that are appropriate.

3. Properly store your out of season items....

If you take care of your clothes, they will last a long time. Use empty water bottles or pieces of cardboard to help your boots keep their shape in the summer when you are not wearing them. It is also very important for clothes to be able to breathe. Plastic, over time, can break down fabric, especially silk, cashmere, and natural fibers. Be sure to store those items in canvas bags. Cedar chips are a great way to keep yucky insects away from your clothing as well.

4. Be ruthless with your items....

If you have clothes in your closet that you don't like but feel like you spent too much money on them to let go, consign them! Clothes that don't fit, that were given to you, are broken and can't be repaired, etc are also great candidates for consignment. I take my things to The Revolving Closet on Grapevine's charming Main Street. You should only leave the items of clothing that make you feel good in your closet. If you have a nostalgic attachment to an item, store it away so that it is not taking up the space of the items that you need to access daily.

5. Streamline your hangers....

Your closet can look messy and jumbled when you use different hangers. I recently changed all of my hangers to Huggable Hangers and I love them! They are slim and the clothing does not fall off of the hangers because of the material they are made of. They come in so many colors. I promise you will love them! I had always wondered about them and when I saw them and touched them during my time at HSN in July, I was sold! Now that I have them in my closet, I am telling everyone how great they are!

6. Store your sweaters...

Sweaters are best stored on shelves or in hanging sweater containers. They will pull and stretch over time if you keep them on hangers. Also, cardboard crossbars from dry cleaners get sticky and leave a line on sweaters, pants, etc over time so be sure to get your clothes off dry cleaning hangers the day you bring them home.

7. Love your shoes...

Most of us have too many shoes! To make it easy to find what you need as you're running out the door, store out of season shoes on top shelves or under the bed. Then, gather all of your shoes on the same side of your closet, group like shoes together (tennis shoes on one level, heels on another, etc) and invest in clear plastic storage containers to keep your shoes clean and organized.

8. Hang like you dress...

Hanging your shirts on top and pants and skirts on the bottom will make it easier for you to get dressed. Don't separate your suits though! For quick choices in the mornings, get some "looks" together and hang them all on one hanger.

9. Add a top shelf to your closet...

Many closets have a lot of wasted space above the hanging bar. By adding a shelf, you create much needed storage for out of season clothes, suitcases or memorabilia.

10. Consign or Donate...

There are many consignment stores around that would love to take your gently used clothes, shoes, purses and jewelry. Set aside a bin or bag for your clothing that you want to take to the consignment shop and when the time is right, take them in. Most consignment stores take clothing seasonally so when you start to see fall clothing in the department stores, the consignment stores are looking for fall clothing too. I take my clothes to The Revolving Closet in Grapevine. All in a Row will take the hassle out of dropping gently-used clothing at consignment stores. Just give them a ring at 214-236-0855.

Home Office Organizing Tips!

Here are some great tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

1. A happy space is a requirement for a home office. You simply will not ever spend time in your home office if it is dark and dreary. I set my desk up right by a window that looks out over a bird feeder that hangs in our back yard. My desk is not large and it is literally in a closet but I have such a lovely view! I like to be tucked away but some people like to be in the middle of all of the action, like the Kitchen for example, so that they can be a part of the family activity. It takes the edge off of paying the bills!

2. Everything needs it's own place in an office. I have boxes for catalogues and magazines as well as bills that need to be pay. I also have a box for everyone in my family and for things that need to go to the office. Justin's mail goes right into his box and he often makes a quick stop at my desk to grab his things. When I leave for my "real" office, I always grab whatever is in the box of papers that goes there! I really love my 31 day organizing box. It is my favorite thing in my office. I use it to sort invitations, bills that are due and paperwork that needs to be sent out. Pottery Barn makes a wonderful new one that does not have an outside edge. This is great because my papers often don't fit in the one on my desk. This option from Christopher Lowell is great because it has storage underneath. In addition to boxes, I have a simple little filing system. Always file alphabetically....you will never remember the color coded system that you set up when you are looking back for something.

3. I would not know what to do with out my bulletin board either. I stick everything that does not belong anywhere else on the board. I have photos, fabric samples, gift certificates and my son's schedule up there now. I also have some tear sheets from magazines of things that inspire me. If I put my gift certificates away in my wallet or in a file, I always forget about them so having them in plain sight is helpful.

4. If you are a "piler" like me then you will love these PileSmart clips. They have erasable labels on them so that you can stack and stack and still find what you need!

Back To School

Saftey Tips:

Here are some saftey tips from Kimberly Schlegel Whitman's Blog:

Backpacks - Do not monogram your child's name on the backpack and avoid stickers on the back of your car that have your child's name on them. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children have a rolling backpack.

Internet and Computer
- Always be in the room when your child is on the computer. Set a time limit for the time they can be on the computer. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that it is no more than 2 hours a day.

Immunizations
- North Texas Schools are using new immunization requirements for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year. Check with your pediatrician and review your child's immunization records and make sure they will be vaccinated according to the requirements.

Avoiding Illness and H1N1
- I checked in with my son's wonderful Pediatrician, Dr. Loc Trieu, to see what I could do to help keep him healthy as to goes to school this year. I love his tips!
-Remind your little one to cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze.
-Wash your hands with soap and water and use Alcohol-based cleansers.
-Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
-If you are sick with a flu like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.
-Check with your school nurse to see what the policies for public health are.
-Hydration is key for your children.
-Don't hesitate to visit with your physician to get updated info and treatment.
